Comments from Taxi Limousine Commission -Commissioner Matt Daus

Reminder to Taxis!

Thank you for your participation in Garden in Transit, the once-in-a-lifetime flower taxi project!  On behalf of all those involved - children and adults alike - thank you for helping make this historic public art project possible.

The City of New York and the TLC require that the children’s painted flower panels be removed from the taxis by midnight 12/31/07.  You can remove them anytime in December.

As you can see on the streets of New York City, many of the floral art works have already been removed by those in the taxi industry, and many others will soon be removed by the taxi participants.  Please see the suggestion sheet for decal removal from MACtac.  Please feel free to contact them related to their removal sheet and/or to learn more about MACtac self-adhesives.

Q. How will the flower panels be removed?
A. Taxi owners and/or drivers will be responsible for peeling off the flower panels at the conclusion of the exhibition on 12/31/07. MACtac has provided guidance for removal (pdf).

Q. Does it cost to participate?
A: There is no paint fee.

Q. Is this approved by the TLC?
A: The TLC unanimously approved the project in July 2006. Memo of Understanding between Portraits of Hope and the TLC (118 K pdf).

Q. When will the flower panels be placed on the taxis?
A. Flower panels will be placed on the taxis from September 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007.

Q. How will the flower panels be applied?
A. The flower panel installation will be developed by professional installers working with MACtac and carried out during the first few weeks of September 2007. The flower panels will be applied at taxi holding centers, fleet centers, and inspection centers.

Q. How will the flower panels be removed?
A. Taxi owners and/or drivers will be responsible for peeling off the flower panels at the conclusion of the exhibition on 12/31/07. MACtac has provided guidance for removal (pdf).

Q. I have an electronic display (advertisement) atop my taxi. Will the flower panels cover my display?
A. No. Taxis with an electronic display or an advertisement wedge on the rooftop will only have the flower panels placed on the hood and trunk. Taxis that do not have an electronic display or advertisement wedge will have flower panels placed on hoods, roofs, and trunks in various combinations.

Q. Will the flower panels cover my medallion?
A. No. Once the flower panel is placed onto the hood of the taxi, an installer will cut around the medallion so that the medallion is visible.

Q. When the flower panels are removed, how will car paint be affected?
A. MACtac assurances related to paint will be provided as part of participation.

Q. Are the flower panels weatherproof?
A. The decal/panel material and paint are intended for all weather conditions and MACtac will provide the specs of the material for which they have provided expertise and selected for this project.
