About the Project

The Long Beach Air Control Tower Project is a project by Portraits of Hope, a non-profit program that conceives and develops one-of-a-kind motivational art, educational and creative therapy projects for children and adults that transform public environments.

The programmatic phase of the Long Beach Tower Project is complete!

young girl explaining her social issuesHundreds of kids from Greater Long Beach schools, after-school programs, and hospitals have participated in this public collaboration which will lead to the artistic transformation of the Long Beach Airport tower in the immediate future. Through their involvement in the program, Long Beach school kids learned about, discussed and expressed themselves about important societal issues, individual and community goals, achievement, and the benefits of teamwork and collaboration. Their teamwork experience has been the creation of the tangible and soon to be highly recognizable and inspirational public artwork at Long Beach Airport. The project will soon culminate in the first artistically painted control tower in the country!

In the course of their participation in the project, the kids painted 7,000 square feet of customized and continuous artistic panels to cover the 120 foot high concrete sections of the tower. The panels have been signed by the many participants including Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster who joined the kids for one of the sessions. During the programmatic phase, several local papers and television stations covered the sessions. There will be a dedication celebration at the Long Beach Airport as soon as installation is complete. And there will be a photo exhibition of the project and its participants at Long Beach Airport that will debut in the Springtime.
