Wright Brother's 100th Anniversary Flight at Kitty Hawk

On 1903, the Wright Brothers

To commemorate the centennial of the Wright Brother's flight at Kitty Hawk, Portraits of Hope was invited to do something special. NASA had learned about Portraits of Hope and contacted us about doing a project with them. After learning about the planned Centennial of Flight celebrations at Kitty Hawk, Portraits of Hope proposed involving thousands of seriously ill children across the country to artistically paint and complete a design for one of the 100 historical planes to be featured at the ceremonies. The project engaged children in hospitals across the country who painted the panels that created a magnificent looking airplane -- a 1937 DC-3. The plane was one of a select few featured at the official ceremony at Kitty Hawk and completed several flybys which astonished the crowds and left people smiling and inspired.
